Local charities are the backbone of our communities, offering essential services and life-changing experiences to those in need. Although their impact is significant, charities depend greatly on the support of businesses to continue their vital work.
These partnerships not only benefit charities but also deepen the connection between businesses and their local communities. Workplace giving fosters a shared sense of responsibility, creating rewarding outcomes for everyone involved.
Here, we celebrate the incredible generosity of one of our longstanding supporters, EMR Metal recycling. EMR has been supporting Leeds Children’s Charity at Lineham Farm for over five years, raising more than £15,000. EMR’s contributions have directly funded short breaks and valuable learning opportunities for young people in the city.
Their latest donation of £3,000 gave 12 children the chance to learn, play, and relax in the heart of the stunning Yorkshire countryside. We spoke with Billy Reid, Operations Manager at EMR’s recycling site on Pontefract Road in Leeds, to learn what supporting the charity means to him.
How did you choose Leeds Children’s Charity at Lineham Farm for your charity to support?
When myself and another manager at the Leeds depots were asked by EMR to select a local charity as part of our initiative to support “young lives,” Leeds Children’s Charity at Lineham Farm (LCC@LF) was suggested to us. After being given a grand tour of the farm, we knew instantly that it was the perfect choice. There was no doubt in our minds – we felt connected to the cause right away.
What are the main reasons you support the work of Leeds Children’s Charity at Lineham Farm?
I grew up and went to school in the Middleton area of Leeds, which wasn’t a particularly affluent place. Many kids from our community had holidays at Silverdale through Leeds Children’s Charity, and for most, it was likely their only time away from home. Knowing this, supporting the charity felt personal – it gave children in need experiences that really matter.
What specifically about the charity’s work resonates with you the most?
Seeing the pure joy on the children’s faces as they get to do things they may never have the chance to experience with their peers – that’s what resonates with me the most. Leeds Children’s Charity at Lineham Farm creates those special, irreplaceable moments of happiness and growth.
Why do you think it’s important for businesses to support a charity?
Supporting a charity not only gives these children opportunities they deserve, but it also strengthens the business’s presence in the local community. While it’s easy to just take, it’s so much more rewarding to give back – it’s about making a difference in a meaningful way.
What does team fundraising bring to your business?
For the business as a whole, it brings positive publicity. But for me and the other staff who’ve visited Lineham Farm, it’s been an incredibly rewarding experience. We enjoyed it so much that nine of us even participated in the Great Leeds Walk – over 26 miles – to raise more much-needed funds for Lineham Farm (still aching from it, but no regrets!).
Personally, it’s given me real job satisfaction – knowing that our efforts are helping to change lives.
Can you support us?
Your donations keep Lineham Farm a special place for the children in Leeds who need it most. Help us pay for children to spend time in a safe and happy environment, doing activities like riding bikes, climbing, learning about nature, and simply having fun.
