Celebrating the first ever Great Leeds Walk

Find out how much we raised for the very first Great Leeds Walk. Megan shares highlights from the day.

15th August 2024

On the 13th July 2024, supporters of Leeds Children’s Charity at Lineham Farm took part in the first ever The Great Leeds Walk. The walk was an ambitious undertaking for the charity, but along with our guide, Phil Lee, from Overlimits, we successfully completed it!

There were three different routes to make the experience accessible for all. The full 26-mile route was circular, starting and finishing at Lineham Farm. The 10-mile walk started at the farm with shuttles back, and the 5k route was around Lineham Farm.

Not only did we raise plenty of crucial funds, but it was a fantastic opportunity to get together with local supporters and see the sights of our beautiful city. We spoke to our Fundraising & Events Manager, Megan, who made the walk possible, to hear about it.

How did the day kick off?

It was an early start with participants arriving at Lineham Farm for 6.30am to begin the walk at 7am. This being a Saturday in the middle of summer, we were impressed by the dedication of those who took part!

There was a real buzz in the air with people pleased to meet each other and looking forward (with some trepidation) to the challenge ahead. Given it was the first Great Leeds Walk, with an original route, people were excited to see what the day had in store.

How many individuals and organisations took part?

We had 11 organisations take part with a total of 121 individuals. This included some existing supporters of the charity, some new faces, and some who were keen walkers looking for a new adventure. A combined total of 1,788 miles were walked!

What landmarks were along the route?

The Great Leeds Walk took participants on a journey through some of Leeds’s most stunning spaces and scenery. The routes passed along the Dales Way link, the Meanwood Valley Trail and the Eccup Reservoir footpath. We visited landmarks including the lovely village of Bramhope, the Chevin Forest Park and the Otley Chevin Steps.

What were the highlights of the day?

The highlight was seeing everyone cross the finish line with a smile still on their face after taking on such an epic challenge. Everyone remained so determined right until the end.

It was great to see new friendships made along the way, with everyone encouraging each other. We even had teams who signed up for and completed the 10-mile route, who decided they wanted to carry on, taking on an additional 7 miles!

How did people fundraise?

It was fantastic to see so many people engaged in supporting Leeds Children’s Charity at Lineham Farm. We saw businesses and individuals engage their friends, family, colleagues and customers.

Dedicated fundraising pages were created for the Great Leeds Walk, meaning everyone could share their personal story or connection to the charity, to explain why they were taking part in the challenge.

Many organisations and businesses who got involved hosted additional fundraisers in the run up to the challenge, such as bake-offs and sweepstakes. These events helped to spread the word and add to their fundraising totals.

How much was raised?

A grand total of £15,492 was raised which we are absolutely thrilled about! The funds raised will help us continue to provide respite, fun, adventure and first-time experiences for children in Leeds.

How did the day end?

There were a lot of sore legs! However, everyone who took part was incredibly proud of their achievements. Everyone received a challenge champion certificate, celebrating their incredible efforts. It was wonderful to welcome teams back to Lineham Farm, where food and drink were provided, to hear stories of the day and take some great photos.

What did people say about the day?

We were thrilled with the positive response we received. The route proved to be really popular, with everyone commenting how stunning the scenery was, even on a rainy day.

Are there plans for next year?

Absolutely! The Great Leeds Walk 2025 has been confirmed and will be taking place on Saturday 12th of July! Teams and individuals will be able to sign up from September.
